The Safeway Holiday Ice Rink at Union Square brings such joy during the season. The rink is wonderfully accessible, with benches for those who want to watch and cheer on their loved ones. The staff were friendly and patient, and the whole … More atmosphere felt warm. Whether you’re a skilled skater or a complete beginner, this rink welcomes everyone with open arms.

Union Square, in all its curated urban splendor, is a stage where architecture flirts with ambition and the streets hum with possibility. As I strolled through the plaza, taking in the meticulously arranged fountains and the stoic statues … More that seem to nod in quiet approval, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own recent feats of strategy and precision — namely, my epic conquest at Dave & Buster’s, where a cascade of tickets fell into my possession, a testament to skill, timing, and a certain ineffable charm.
Each boutique and gallery here seems designed to test one’s aesthetic discernment, much like the arcade games that challenged me last week. One wonders: is it the city shaping the visitor, or the visitor — a master of claw machines and skee-ball alike — shaping their experience of the city? On Union Square, I felt decidedly like the latter.
The plazas themselves pulse with life, yet there’s a rhythm only perceptible to those attuned to subtle triumphs. Passing the bright displays and luxury façades, I imagined the tickets from my D&B victory spilling like confetti across the cobblestones, a private celebration unnoticed by the casual onlooker. Even the street performers seemed, momentarily, to acknowledge my aura of triumph, as if the universe itself had RSVP’d to my arcade victory.
In sum, Union Square is more than a gathering of shops and fountains; it is a proving ground, a cathedral of ambition, and, on certain nights, a quiet companion to the memory of one’s own glorious conquests — whether they be in the realm of fine taste or the gleaming lights of a Dave & Buster’s scoreboard

Returning to the Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square for the second time was an experience filled with joy and festive spirit. Although I'm not much of a skater, the enthusiasm of my family, who accompanied me on a 3-hour drive to the … More event, was infectious. The staff at the rink were incredibly accommodating and kind, allowing us to enter despite our late arrival.
Our group, comprising four kids and seven adults, had a fantastic time. For me, a personal achievement was being able to skate around the rink once without falling, a small victory that added to the fun. The atmosphere was lively and festive, making it an enjoyable experience for everyone, regardless of skating skills.
Contrary to my expectations, the temperature at the rink was quite comfortable, adding to the pleasantness of the evening. The staff members were helpful and attentive, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all the skaters.
For those looking to capture holiday memories, I recommend taking pictures near the large Christmas tree. However, be prepared for a bit of a wait, as this popular spot can get quite busy. It's a good idea to have one member of your party hold a spot while the others skate, ensuring you don't miss out on this picturesque photo opportunity.

This has been our Christmas Eve tradition for so many years. So fun to skate to amazing music in the middle of Union Square. ( It does get a little crowded though.

I recently had the pleasure of spending a delightful afternoon at the Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square, and I must say, it's easily one of the best winter activities in the Bay Area, whether you're a local or a visitor. From the … More moment we arrived, the experience was nothing short of exhilarating.
One of the standout features of this winter wonderland is the reasonable pricing. At just $20 for an hour of icy fun, it's an affordable way to embrace the festive spirit. The payment process is also remarkably swift and modern – a simple scan of the code upon entry, and you're all set to book your preferred time slot.
Once we stepped onto the ice, the real magic began. The rink itself is well-maintained, creating a smooth and enjoyable skating surface. Whether you're a seasoned skater or just finding your ice legs, the atmosphere is welcoming and inclusive. Families, friends, and solo skaters alike all seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves.
What truly set this experience apart, though, was the exceptional staff. Not only were they friendly and approachable, but they were also incredibly helpful and cooperative. Whether it was offering a helping hand to a novice skater or ensuring the safety of everyone on the rink, their dedication was evident. It's clear that the staff at Holiday Ice Rink takes pride in creating a positive and enjoyable environment for all visitors.
The festive ambiance of Union Square itself added an extra layer of charm to the experience. Surrounded by twinkling lights, cheerful decorations, and the buzz of the holiday season, it felt like stepping into a winter postcard.
Overall, my visit to the Holiday Ice Rink was a memorable and joyous experience. It's an ideal activity for anyone seeking a taste of winter magic in the heart of San Francisco. The combination of reasonable pricing, efficient service, and a fantastic staff makes it a standout destination for winter fun. I highly recommend it to locals looking for a seasonal escape and visitors hoping to add a touch of Bay Area winter magic to their itinerary.

We booked a 10pm ticket. It was sold out when we arrived, so you should book ahead. Entry and skate rental was well organized. It is a beautiful setting for skating.
The arena was very crowded- it would be best if the owners- organizers
… More of this event would designate a separate area for kids. Allowing kids to skate with the assistance devices (polar bears) created unsafe situations because most kids were unattended and they kept skating into people and making other skaters fall. Kids are not experienced enough to know skating etiquette and often cut others off, etc… This could be avoided. Alternately- there could be some times reserved for ages 12+ to avoid overcrowding the rink with unattended kids. This boils down to a safety factor.

Always enjoy skating at the Holiday Ice Rink in Union square. I always go every time I’m in town this time of year. Opens on the beginning of December until mid January.
It can get really busy during the middle of the day (noon until 18h00)
    … More
Very well maintained all day with a mini zamboni.
A bit pricey to skate but you pay for the exclusivity of the experience($20 General admission, $15 Children 8 & under).
With the Christmas music playing , the giant Christmas tree 🎄 and all the light on the nearby store , the atmosphere is amazing. 🤩

Who would have thought that they would have this here in San Francisco California! Being from Canada it’s the last thing that you would expect. So it was a thrill to see this and it was jam packed! Fun! 😎👍
